What is Vein Disease?
Vein disease is a general term for patients with a condition called Chronic Venous Insufficiency or Chronic Venous Reflux. Typically, veins have valves that push blood from the legs up to the heart. But when these valves become weak or damaged, gravity pulls blood in the wrong direction, allowing blood to pool in the legs.
You may be suffering from venous reflux if you have any of these symptoms:
- Varicose Veins
- Leg or Ankle Swelling
- Leg Heaviness or Fatigue
- Leg Pain, Aching or Cramping
- Burning or Itching of the Skin
- Restless Legs
- Skin Changes or Rashes
- Ulcers, Open Wounds or Sores
Risk Factors for Vein Disease
There are many factors that can increase your risk for vein disease:
- Older Age
- Family History
- Obesity
- Female Gender
- Pregnancy
- History of DVT
- Sitting/Standing for Long Periods
- Smoking
- Leg Injury
- Phlebitis (Swelling of Veins)
