Blood Clots

Blood clots in the legs, also known as thrombosis, can be an issue involving deep or superficial circulation. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that can threaten your life because of the risk of a clot traveling to the lungs and resulting in a pulmonary embolism. Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), however, is typically a short-term condition (1-4 weeks) that doesn’t lead to serious, life-threatening complications.

What Causes Blood Clots?

Blood clots in the leg are most commonly caused by prolonged periods of immobility, such as after surgery or during a long airplane flight. Other risk factors for developing blood clots include pregnancy, taking birth control pills, and having certain medical conditions.

What are the Symptoms of a Blood Clot?

Symptoms of both DVT and SVT include inflammation, tenderness, and firmness of the visible vein. The skin may also become permanently discolored. SVT is characterized by inflammation due to clotted veins just below the surface of the skin. This form of clot is typically a short-term condition (1-4 weeks) that doesn’t lead to serious, life-threatening complications.
